Mitigation of Uranium Mining Impacts—A Review on Groundwater Remediation Technologies

نویسندگان

چکیده

Groundwater contamination is one of the most concerning issues from uranium mining activities. Radionuclides cannot be destroyed or degraded, unlike some organic contaminants (and similar to metals). Besides, sites, where radionuclides may found, are mainly radioactive and mixed waste disposal areas, therefore many other also present in groundwater. The state-of-the-art environmental technology continually changing, thus a review on technologies application utmost relevance. This work gives an overview available remediation for groundwater contaminated with resulting mining. For each technology, theoretical background provided; state development, limitations, efficiency, potential adverse effects approached. Examples performance monitoring progress described, criteria selection appropriate given. effective will always site-specific as result multitude geographic operational factors that influence effluent quality impact technical feasibility treatment methods. Ion exchange, chemical precipitation, membrane filtration have been considered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) best demonstrated radium removal. Several (technological aspects non-technical factors), but even industrial proven, two important challenges remain; (still) mobile generation secondary wastes. constantly evolving, future advancement depends rigorously monitored, documented results achieved. Therefore, approached this paper no means exhaustive.

Physical and Chemical Groundwater Remediation Technologies

Groundwater is the main source of drinking water as well as agricultural and industrial usage. Unfortunately, groundwater quality has been degraded due to improper waste disposal practices and accidental spillage of hazardous chemicals. Therefore, it is critical that the groundwater contamination be prevented and the contaminated groundwater at numerous sites worldwide be remediated in order to...

Remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated groundwater.

The contamination of groundwater by heavy metal, originating either from natural soil sources or from anthropogenic sources is a matter of utmost concern to the public health. Remediation of contaminated groundwater is of highest priority since billions of people all over the world use it for drinking purpose. In this paper, thirty five approaches for groundwater treatment have been reviewed an...

Biogeochemical aspects of uranium mineralization, mining, milling, and remediation

Natural uranium (U) occurs as a mixture of three radioactive isotopes: U, U, and U. Only U is fissionable and makes up about 0.7% of natural U, while U is overwhelmingly the most abundant at greater than 99% of the total mass of U. Prior to the 1940s, U was predominantly used as a coloring agent, and U-bearing ores were mined mainly for their radium (Ra) and/or vanadium (V) content; the bulk of...

On-site biological remediation of contaminated groundwater: a review.

On-site biological treatment has been used for groundwater cleanup from industrial and agricultural chemicals. The pump-and-treat efficiency is controlled by retardation of contaminants by sorption onto the saturated subsurface solids and by the presence of non-aqueous-phase liquids in the aquifer. On-site bioreactors have been widely used for treatment of contaminants such as petroleum hydroca...

Use of iron-based technologies in contaminated land and groundwater remediation: a review.

Reactions involving iron play a major role in the environmental cycling of a wide range of important organic, inorganic and radioactive contaminants. Consequently, a range of environmental clean-up technologies have been proposed or developed which utilise iron chemistry to remediate contaminated land and surface and subsurface waters, e.g. the use of injected zero zero-valent iron nanoparticle...
